“HUST-USYD Academic Lecture Series: Information and Energy Coupling Mechanism for the Mobile Communication and Computing Fusion” Successfully Held

    time:July 4, 2022

On the afternoon of July 1st,  HUST-USYD Academic Lecture Series: Information and Energy Coupling Mechanism for the Mobile Communication and Computing Fusion was successfully held online. Professors from Australia, Switzerland and China attended the seminar and delivered speeches. They include Professor Li Yonghui and Professor Branka Vucetic from The University of Sydney (USYD), Professor Babak Falsafi from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne), Professor Tian Lin from Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Science, Professor Li Chenglin from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Professor Ge Xiaohu from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). The seminar, hosted by Professor Ge Xiaohu from the School of Electronic Information and Communications of HUST, attracted a large number of scholars and students from HUST and USYD.

Professor Li Yonghui delivered the speech themed on URLLC for 5G and Beyond. He introduced the reliability and low latency of URLLC , and showed the simulation results of different types of short codes. He also focused on the machine learning-based communication systems, showing the research results of URLLC based on artificial intelligence.

Professor Branka Vucetic gave a report on Channel Coding for 5G/6G Uitra-reliable Low-latency Communications (URLLC). She proposed a new polar code design scheme, proving that the short polar codes with sequential decoding have the best reliability and complexity. The new polar codes are possible candidates for the URLLC 5G/6G standard.

Professor Babak Falsafi gave a speech on Post-Moore Cloud Architecture: Challenges & Opportunities. He pointed out that the demand grows faster than Moore, and Moores law is slowing down, and summarized the features of post-Moore servers.

Professor Tian Lin made a speech on Research on High Energy-efficiency Mobile Communication System Architecture and Demonstration, demonstrating the research on theoretical analysis and algorithm design to optimize system energy efficiency.

Professor Li Chenglin delivered a speech on Robustness and Generalization of Deep Reinforcement Learning and Applications to Solving Stochastic Optimal Control Problems, introducing deep reinforcement learning to solve stochastic optimal control problem, monotonic robust policy optimization and application in adaptive video streaming.

Professor Ge Xiaohu gave a speech on Modelling and Optimization of Low-energy Logic Gates Based on Stochastic Thermodynamics. Based on stochastic thermodynamics, the model of AND gate consisting of single energy level transistors is constructed. He also proposed the AND gate energy consumption model based on input state transition, and the energy consumption of 3-input AND circuit is optimized by using the optimal operation order.

The seminar not only facilitated the academic exchange and cooperation between HUST and USYD, but will also promote student exchange and broaden students horizon.
